U-Anchor Installed in 150 MPH Wind Zone

ANNA MARIA ISLAND, Fla. – The U-Anchor 2000c™ was recently installed on the rooftop of the newly completed LEED registered building within the sustainably designed and built Anna Maria Historic Green Village.

The U-Anchor 2000c supports a solar racking system holding 42 photovoltaic panels anticipated to produce 11 KW of electricity. The mixed-use Net-Zero Energy Anna Maria Island project resides along one of Florida’s hurricane-prone tourist destinations at a Gulf of Mexico beach, where local codes require building materials to pass 150 mph wind load testing before they can be installed.

Third-party independent testing by Trinity ERD found the U-Anchor products to have approximately 1,000 lbs of ultimate load capacity, and the rooftop attachment product can perform in conditions that exceed hurricane force winds due to its high tensile strength and shear strength. The U-Anchor 2000c rooftop attachments were installed in Anna Maria Island with a hot air welder on the building’s 1,000 square foot fully-adhere low-slope white membrane roof without requiring any penetrations of the TPO membrane and without the need for any ballast on the solar racking system.

The U-Anchor 2000c can save time and money compared to traditional solar mounting attachment methods and can be quickly installed at a rate of 12 per man hour. Solar integrator, Region Solar of Sarasota and New England, oversaw the installation of the U-Anchor 2000c, which were also utilized to mount a rooftop copper-glass panel for solar thermal hot water heating.

“The benefit to the U-Anchor 2000c is you are not penetrating the roof,” said solar integrator Andrew Tanner of Region Solar. A roof pre-design meeting early in the project was held between the roofing contractor and Tanner to design the support structure for the flex needed in a high wind area with a TPO roof membrane. This enabled Tanner to utilize the U-Anchor 2000c.

The newly constructed building at 507 Pine Avenue will be used for residential units on the second-story and a bakery in the storefront at street level. The project is anticipated to gain LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The other buildings in the historic village were designed and built to be Net-Zero Energy and they have received USGBC’s LEED Platinum certification.

The Anna Maria Historic Green Village is a development of Mike and Lizzie Thrasher, who have spent the past eight years restoring several historic island cottages, moving and grouping them together, and then modernizing them with renewable and green energy systems. The Thrashers also worked with local entrepreneurs to create and locate their businesses in the cottages and other commercial buildings – all while preserving the Old Florida charm of the 100-year-old Gulf Coast island city.

U-Anchor 2000 Installed on One of New York Stat’s Largest Rooftop Solar Projects

YONKERS, N.Y.  — The U-Anchor 2000™ rooftop attachment products from Anchor Products, LLC of Grapevine, Texas, have been installed on the i.Park Hudson rooftop solar project — one of New York State’s largest rooftop solar projects.

The electric power generated by the photovoltaic array will serve a significant portion of the energy needed for the tenants of the 24-acre technology, office and industrial complex in Yonkers, N.Y. The project is scheduled to start producing electricity by Jan. 31. The rooftop solar array is the equivalent in area of two football fields and was developed by Chicago-based Half Moon Ventures. The building is owned by Joe Cotter, principal of real estate development firm National Resources of Greenwich, CT.

Local dignitaries, including Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, attended a ribbon cutting ceremony Dec. 6 at the Yonkers property, on the rooftop of one of eight buildings within the complex. The buildings are covered with 3,700 solar panels and will generate power equivalent to the daily electricity needs of 120 homes.

“We were very excited to play our part in anchoring the solar racking system for this massive photovoltaic electric power generating system,” said Anchor Product’s President Joel Stanley. He added, “Our U-Anchor product has already protected this multi-million dollar solar investment from Superstorm Sandy and will continue to support this photovoltaic system for many decades to come.”

Anchor Products Develops Permanent Attachment System for Lightning Protection Equipment

GRAPEVINE, Texas — Anchor Products, LLC, has introduced a permanent, non-penetrating solution for attachment of lightning protection equipment to low slope roof membranes.

The Anchor LP-800 and Anchor LP-400 offer non-penetrating attachment to roof membranes and can be quickly installed at a rate of 20 per man hour. Each attachment system is light weighing and provides permanent attachment to all traditional roofing materials.

The products include the Anchor LP-800 (Air Terminal Base) and the Anchor LP-400 (Cable Clamp Base). The Anchor LP-800 is a 3 inch stainless steel base plate with a ½ “ – 13 by 2 inch bolt weighing less than 6 ounces. U-Anchor 2000 Holds up to “Super Storm” Sandy on 1 Megawatt Rooftop Solar Project in Yonkers

YONKERS, NY – The U-Anchor 2000 solar racking attachments for low-slope roofs held firmly during Hurricane Sandy on a nearly completed 1 Megawatt photovoltaic installation in Yonkers, according to the project’s roofing contractor.

“That was one good part of that project, the anchors held,” according to Tim Kraft of Kraft Roofing Company in Fairlawn, New Jersey. Kraft and his crew had installed 90 percent of the U-Anchor 2000 solar rooftop attachments for the project and most of the solar racking before the storm struck.

According to Joel Stanley, President of Anchor Products, “Contractors have reported installation times of eight times faster than the competition, without the need for penetrating the roof membrane or adding ballast.”

The roof membrane receiving the U-Anchor 2000 attachments was a fully adhered, reinforced 60 mil EPDM membrane. The 16 inch targets of the U-Anchor 2000 attachments were adhered to the roof membrane with seam splice tape. The Schletter Solo5 solar racking system was attached to the rooftop with the U-Anchor 2000 solar attachment system from Anchor Products. The Schletter Gator Clamp held the racking system to the posts of the U-Anchor 2000 attachments.

The U-Anchor 2000 attachment system has passed rigorous testing to the ASCE 7-05 and the ASTM E330-02 (2010) standards. The independent testing lab at Trinity ERD found the U-Anchor 2000 to have approximately 1,000 lbs of ultimate load capacity. The test results demonstrated the product can perform in wind events exceeding 180 mph due to the U-Anchor 2000’s high tensile strength and shear strength.

Weather warnings for Yonkers reported hurricane force winds and extreme wind gust were recorded in the vicinity of the 1 megawatt solar project. The multi-story building on which the photovoltaic panels were installed are in the vicinity of the George Washington Bridge where Highway 7 crosses the Hudson River. Winds speeds recorded on the George Washington Bridge exceeded 90 mph during the worst of the storm.

The roof project did sustain damage due to flying debris and building materials which punctured the EPDM roof membrane, creating more than 32 holes that will need to be repaired. But neither the U-Anchor 2000 nor the Schletter solar racking system were damaged by Super Storm Sandy, according to Kraft.

Schletter VP of Engineering Gives Positive Review of U-Anchor 2000 for Attachment of Solar Racking Systems

Schletter, Inc has thoroughly reviewed the performance and testing data of the U-Anchor 2000 and gave the solar racking attachment product a positive review.

U-Anchor – Efficient and Effective!

Anchor Products made a big splash at the RCI show earlier in the Month. There was non-stop traffic in our booth. We heard comments from consultants saying, “Finally, a legitimate way of fastening items to a flat roof without penetrating its surface.”

Anchor Products also received a large order for a project in the Caribbean to attach solar racks to a roof. We were told that the U-Anchor saved the project. The cost of pre-pouring concrete slabs to attach the racks to were proving to complex and expensive. Anchor has also received requests for quotes on other projects.

Stepping into the Limelight

It has been a busy and exciting time for Anchor Products and the U-Anchor product line; the revolutionary non-penetrating, non-ballasted roof equipment anchor. The only one of its kind in the world.

Final testing has concluded. The U-Anchor exceeded its previous estimates. This removes any hesitancy for other manufacturers to give their endorsements. In addition, this allows roof consultants and solar integrators to pull successful building permits for any roof mounted solar project in connection with PVC or TPO roofing membrane.  You can view the test data and see the videos on Anchor Products website.

Acceptance of the U-Anchor product line is growing fast. Anchor has two major membrane manufacturers that have given their endorsements to use the U-Anchor line with current projects IB Roof Systems and Duro-Last. Anchor showed its product at the IRE (International Roofing Expo) and they were overwhelmed with inquiries and immediate interest for current projects. Solar racking manufacturers are also discussing private label agreements so they can integrate the U-Anchor into their system.
